Where Do Credit Scores Come From?
Your credit score is a scientific representation of your responsibility. Your creditworthiness is calculated by three credit reporting agencies - Experian, Equifax and TransUnion - who collect data on you from numerous sources. Traditionally, the scores have been from 300 to 850 and most people have a score over 600.
In recent years a new scale going from 500 to 990 has become popular, with an A, B, C, D, F grade assigned as in school to the 900s, 800s, 700s and so on, respectively. Credit repair specialists will work with you to get your scores in the B and A range, well over 700 on the old chart, so you can have the best possible credit.
How Are Scores Calculated?
Your credit score is made up of several factors, the two biggest being your payment history and your credit utilization. When you pay bills late or miss payments altogether, a report is made to one or all three of the credit bureaus, taking your score down some. Even bills that aren't on debts per se can report payment issues - your cable company, the electric company or your landlord, really anybody.
Credit utilization is the ratio of your total debt to your total available credit, in other words the balances on your credit cards or lines of credit compared to the limits on these accounts. If you max out a card or close an account, your score takes a hit.
Liens, judgments or tax debts are counted separately in your score and can particularly affect your credit. Credit repair specialists know that opening small accounts which you can keep low balances on and pay off regularly is the way great credit is born.
